Flock of birds on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is seen from behind with long brown hair and a loose grey knit sweater pulled off one shoulder. A small flock of simple black bird silhouettes in flight sits over the shoulder blade, with the birds drawn at varied angles and sizes. The plain grey textured wall behind keeps the focus on the tattoo and the skin.

Nobody on the ninth floor of Ashgrove House could say when the birds first came. Mrs Oyelaran swore they were already there the winter the lifts broke down, a loose flock of starlings that lifted off the roof at dusk and wheeled over the car park like someone shaking out a dark sheet. The old people said you must never count them aloud, and the young people laughed at the old people.

Tomasz was seven and had no patience for rules. One evening he stood on the walkway with his chin on the railing and counted them out loud, one, two, all the way to thirteen. The flock wavered. In the morning the sky over the estate was empty, and a single black feather lay on the bonnet of a van below his window.
His gran took him up to the roof and sat him on an upturned crate. She told him the birds were the ones who had moved away from the block and never quite finished leaving, and that each name spoken aloud gave one of them a reason to go. So Tomasz learned to count in his head, silently, the way you count stairs in the dark. When the flock came back at dusk he counted again, and this time there were fourteen, and the new one flew at the back with its wing held a little wider than the rest.
He watched them bank over the hill where the new estate lights were coming on, one bird peeling away from the others and fading toward the river. His gran said that was fine. Somebody had to go first, and somebody had to keep the count.
