Small black fine line semicolon tattoo on the inner wrist and forearm of a person holding their raised hand, shown in a muted, grainy photograph.

Small semicolon tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black semicolon sits on the inner wrist, just above the forearm. The mark has crisp edges and simple, uniform fill with no shading, so the linework reads as clean and delicate. The photograph is taken against a dark background with a worn, speckled vintage finish, and the tattoo is placed centrally on the lower arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Osric had copied the same psalter for eleven winters before he noticed the mark. In the margin of the chapter on sowing, a previous hand had set a small dot above a comma, a thing none of the brothers could name. The abbot called it a pause that refused to finish. "A full stop closes the door," he said, tapping the ink pot with his thumb. "This one leaves it on the latch."

Osric did not believe him. He had walked the cloister long enough to know that men stopped at the gate and never came through the wicket, and that a sentence could be cut short by one careless knife. So in the spring, when the flood came down from the fells and took the lower granary, he took the mark from the old psalter and drew it fresh on a strip of vellum, the dot a little apart from the comma, the way the old hand had made it.

He tied the strip inside his sleeve, against the wrist, and walked the road to the ferry town where his sister had been living with a widower and a cough. The water was high and brown. At the bank he found the words he had left unsaid for six years, and he said the first of them, and then the rest, slowly, each clause hanging on the one before it.

When he reached the far side his sister was standing on the step. She did not ask what had kept him so long. She only held out her hand, palm up, the way a reader waits for the next line.
