Small star tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a small black star with two smaller dots beside it, tattooed on the inner wrist. The linework is fine and solid black with no visible shading, and the ink is the only colour in an otherwise soft, muted image. The shallow depth of field blurs a light background, a patterned cuff and a brown leather bag strap, keeping the tattoo as the clear focus.

Tom, the grey ewe in the end pen dropped twins at three this morning, and the second one came out blue and not breathing, so I sat in the straw rubbing its ribs with a bit of sacking until Dad's cough came across the yard and he took over. It's by the Rayburn now, wrapped in your old jumper, which I'm told you'll want back.

The frost came down hard after that. Walking to the gate at dusk I saw the first star over the top field, bright and lonely, with two smaller ones tucked just below it, exactly the shape of the little star you drew on the back of my school jotter the summer before you left. You said they were its children. I stood there with the feed bucket until my fingers went numb, thinking that was daft, and then thinking you'd have laughed at me for not saying it out loud.
Dad says lambing will be finished by the end of the month and the shearers are booked for March, so there's no need to come home for it. I'm not asking. I'm only telling you the lamb in the jumper has started to stand on its own and keeps trying to chew the buckle of the belt you left on the hook.
If the sky's clear over your flat, look up for me. Find the big one with its two little ones. Nell
