Music notes behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A side profile of a woman with her hair tied back, showing a small cluster of black musical notes tattooed on the skin behind her ear and along the neck. The linework is thin and crisp, with solid black ink and no shading. The warm, sunlit background of bare trees keeps the focus on the small tattoo and the ear piercings nearby.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Pryce had kept the same notebook on the bench by the wall for thirty-one winters, and every morning she wrote down what the blackbird sang before it stopped to eat. Her nephew Tom thought it was a hobby for a woman with nothing else to do. He said so over the gate on a Tuesday in February, rattling a bag of compost he had carried from the car, and she did not look up from the page.

"Listen," she said. "It goes up, then it drops a fifth, then it holds."

He listened, mostly to the traffic on the lane. But the bird did as she said, and the phrase came round again, and she drew five lines on the paper with a pencil worn down to a stub and set three black dots on them, then a fourth with a little tail.

He didn't argue after that. He dug the bed where the old roses had been, turning up clay, a broken pipe stem and a brass button shaped like a star. Ada tapped the notebook against her knee. Each page held a tune the garden had sung to her that year, and she had copied them all out carefully, the way her husband had taught her to copy hymns from the organ at chapel.

When the light went amber through the bare plum trees, she closed the book and asked him to fetch the kettle. Tom came back with two mugs and found her humming the blackbird's phrase back to itself, a little flat and perfectly content. On the bench the open page showed the same six notes, and beneath them, in her looping hand, the date and the word again.
