Mandala and paisley sleeve on arm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her arm raised shows a dense, symmetrical sleeve of dark mandala, paisley and petal motifs covering her forearm and upper arm. The fine, even linework and stippled dots are rendered in a single dark brown-black tone, and the patterns flow down the arm in layered bands. The image is a close, sunlit outdoor shot against a brick wall and greenery, with her face cropped out of frame.

You keep the stencil folded inside your passport, between the photo page and the visa stamp, because the mandala you drew for your sister's wedding has to be carried whole. The officer in the control booth at Harwick Marine has reading glasses pushed into her grey hair, and she holds the paper up to the strip light before you can stop her. She asks what it is. You say paisley. She says it looks more like a map.

You explain it the way your aunt explained it to you, with your finger on the paper. Each ring is a town, the petals are the gardens along the river, and the dots are the wells where the women stopped to fill their jars. The officer nods at the dotted line that runs out from the centre and asks what that is. You tell her it is the road your grandmother walked in 1961, the one that was never on any atlas, and that the henna artist who taught you insisted it had to go in, or the pattern would not close.
She does not hand the stencil back straight away. She turns it over, finds a faint pencil mark on the reverse, and reads it aloud in careful Urdu-accented English: the leaf points north. Then she laughs, quietly, and says her own mother used to write the same thing on the lids of spice tins. She stamps your passport, slides it across the counter, and sets the stencil back in your hand. Carry it straight, she says. Tell your sister the leaf points north.
