Lizard and ornamental pattern on forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A lizard or gecko is the central subject, climbing along the forearm and surrounded by swirling, mandala-like ornamental filler. The linework is bold and the lizard is shaded in greys with some solid black areas. The tattoo is shown in colour-neutral tones against warm skin and a white textured blanket.

The queen of Oriel sent for the wall-warden the week the cisterns cracked. He was a thin man who kept a sack of geckos inside his coat, and he had a habit of counting the ridges of his own knuckles while he spoke. 'The water is under the stone,' he said. 'Something must climb down and find the seam.'

He chose a grey gecko with a spiralled tail, the one that had sat on the palace gate for longer than anyone could remember. It climbed the fountain basin, then the dry channels, then down the throat of the old well, its toes ticking against the stone like a clock. Each night the warden lowered a lamp, and each morning the lizard came back up with a curl of dust on its back and nothing in its mouth.

On the ninth day it did not come back. The court argued. The steward wanted to seal the well and call it lost. The warden sat on the bottom step of the chapel and waited, turning his knuckles over and over, until at dusk a thread of dark moisture showed on the stones where the gecko had gone. He went down with a torch and found the lizard curled on a ledge above a black pool, its tail wrapped twice around an iron key, as if it had been guarding the way in.

They drew water that week. The queen had the gecko's likeness cut into the gate beside the old carving, so the children of Oriel would know which way to look when the ground went hard. The warden kept his sack, but he never again let anyone else carry the lamp.
