Rose, skull and diamond thigh tattoo

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A woman lies on a white fur rug in a black top and white trainers, with her legs bent and her face out of frame. The outer thigh carries a large black outline design of roses, a skull and a diamond, with a vertical floral motif running down the leg and a flower outline near the knee. The shading is minimal and the work is mostly pale-skinned line on tan skin, with small floral marks visible on the upper arm.

Sit down, sit down, and mind the wasp by the cup. You want the one about Mrs Okonedo's roses over the wall in Thistle Lane? Then I'll tell it from the start, because the start is where the trouble always hides.

Old Harcourt planted that bed the spring his daughter was born, forty-one roses in a row, every one a different colour, and he swore none would ever be cut for a funeral. He kept his word. When he died the bed went wild, and his widow Ada let the briars take the wall and the gate. The village children said the garden was haunted, because a grinning skull showed through the hedge every time the rain washed the soil back.

It was no ghost. It was a pocket watch case and a little stone that had gone into the earth the night Harcourt lost his wedding ring in a card game with the vicar, which is another tale entirely. Ada dug the skull out with a trowel one wet morning, wiped it on her apron, and set it on the windowsill to dry. Then she went back out and found the diamond the rain had uncovered beside it, sitting in the mud like a drop of frost.

She took both to the jeweller in Market Row. He said the stone was paste. Ada said she knew that already, and had only wanted someone to tell her the truth about it. So she planted the skull beneath the first rose, and that summer the roses came up redder than anything else in the county.
