Floral bouquet on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small floral bouquet centred on a pink rose, with a red bloom below it, slate grey leaves and brown buds and berries around the edges. The shapes are filled with flat, solid colour with little shading, and the design sits on the forearm with a beaded bracelet and a wooden floor in the background. The skin looks smooth and the design appears to be a temporary or transfer style rather than an inked tattoo.

Dear Ruth, you will not believe what Mrs Pardoe has done. She came into the shop on Tuesday with a tea tray she had bought at the jumble in Sudbury and asked whether I could paint a bouquet over the scratched brown varnish, because her Joan is to be married at Easter and she wants something in the house that did not come from the High Street.

I told her I had only ever painted hens and barrows for the Harvest Supper, but she put a sixpence on the counter and said that was all right, she did not mind what it looked like so long as it was mine. So I went at it with the small brush you gave me for my birthday. I began with the rose in the middle, a deep pink with a lighter stroke swirled inside it like milk stirred into jam, then I put a red bloom beneath with its petals falling open at the bottom. The leaves I did in slate grey, the colour of the sky over the church before rain, and I dotted brown buds round the edges where the stems ran out.

Mrs Pardoe came back at five to see it dry. She stood a long while with her hands in her coat pockets, then she said, 'It looks like it's been picked this morning,' and I did not have the heart to tell her it had only been picked from my own head. She wants it wrapped in brown paper for the wedding, not as a present for Joan, but as a gift for the cottage, so Joan can carry it across the threshold herself.

Write soon and tell me whether Dennis has got over his cold. I am keeping the leftover pink for your Christmas cards.

Love, Margaret
