Sunflowers on the top of a foot

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

Two sunflowers with yellow petals, brown centres and green leaves are tattooed across the top of a foot. The linework is dark and defined, and the petals use shaded yellows and oranges. The foot is shown from the side against a plain yellow wall, with the flowers angled diagonally across the skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The seed tin lived on the top shelf of the Dutch barn, above the tractor oil and the box of baler twine, and nobody touched it between harvests. In January the frost came sideways through the open doors, so I'd climb up with a torch in my teeth to check the seeds were still dry. Grandmother had saved them from a row of giants she grew against the north wall, heads as wide as dinner plates, and she swore they remembered which way to face.

That winter the yard stayed white for nine days. The heifers stood steaming by the gate and the water trough cracked twice. I sat at the kitchen table with the tin open and a saucer of damp kitchen roll, sorting plump seeds from thin ones by holding each up to the lamp. Mum said I was being daft, that nothing sprouts in a February kitchen. I told her nothing needed to sprout yet. I only wanted to know if they still had the summer in them.

On the ninth morning the sky cleared to a hard pale blue and the cold was so sharp it made my back teeth ache. Overnight one seed had split on the saucer, a pale green tongue of shoot with its head bent toward the window. I turned the saucer to face the wall, and by dinner the shoot had swung back round, patient as a compass needle, toward the glass and whatever light there was.

I carried the saucer out to the greenhouse and set it on the bench beside the rusted tin, then left the door cracked so it could find the sun. Dad came in stamping snow off his boots, saw it, and said nothing, which from him is as good as a blessing.
