Pink rose and foliage bouquet on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A small floral bouquet sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist. A pink rose forms the focal point, flanked by a dark red bloom, dark green leaves and brown buds. The ink appears layered with soft, painterly shading, set against plain pale skin and a grey floor.

Dearest Nell,

The rose came out of the wall garden this morning, the pink one Mr Ashdown calls his dinner-plate, and I have been painting it all afternoon in the cool of the scullery because the studio light has gone too yellow for pink. You would laugh at me. I have spent an hour on one petal and am not sure it is right yet.

Mrs Pellow wants the bouquet for the vicarage fête table, a pressed-card keepsake for each of the girls who sing in the choir. She gave me a sheet of creamy paper and said, Make them look like they might be picked tomorrow, Lottie. So I have. The dark red bloom is from the bed by the orchard gate, where the late plums have dropped and the wasps are drunk on them. I put in the brown buds because she wanted something to make the bunch look lived in, and the dark leaves because nothing else in the village is so green in September.

Yesterday Tom from the cider press came up the lane with a basket of windfalls and stood behind me a long while without speaking. When I looked round he said the pink was the exact colour of the inside of a peeled apple, then went red himself and walked off whistling. I have been thinking about that all evening, more than the petals.

I will post the cards on Saturday. Keep me a seat on the wall at Michaelmas, and don't let Father tell you the plums are better this year. They aren't.

Your loving sister, Charlotte
