Pink carnation and red poppy thigh tattoo

Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a cluster of realistic flowers: a pink carnation, a bright red poppy and white blooms with yellow centres, linked by thin green stems and leaves. The petals are shaded with soft tonal gradients, and fine detail is visible in the centres and edges of the blooms. Colour ink dominates the composition, which runs diagonally across the upper thigh beside a black and white striped fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gardener's widow in Marrowdale kept her seeds in tins labelled with the names of the men who had brought them home. There was a tin of carnation seed from the mountain traders, a tin of poppy from the sea towns, and a small tin with no name at all that she would not open in front of anyone.

When the miller's boy came up the hill one wet spring asking for cuttings, she gave him the poppies and not the carnations, because the carnations had to be pinched back in May and he would not wait that long. He took them down in a wet cloth and planted them where the river bent, and by June the bank was red as a cut hand.

The white blooms came the following year, after the flood. Nobody in the valley could say where they had come from, only that they grew between the carnations and the poppies as if they had always been there, and that the miller's boy, grown tall, would stand among them at dusk with a stub of pencil behind his ear and not speak to anyone. The widow watched him from her step. She had given him more than she meant to, and she did not mind, and she never opened the tin with no name, because she had learned that some things are kept best by being left shut.
