Floral bouquet on an upper thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A bouquet of flowers drawn in thin black linework, centred on a large peony with a hibiscus-like bloom, small clustered blossoms and several leaves. The image is shaded only through fine stippled and hatched detail, with no colour ink. The bouquet sits on the outer thigh against plain skin and a grey waistband, with the tattoo framed roughly in the middle of the frame.

Rain came sideways under the market awnings, and Maud kept shifting the buckets so the stems wouldn't stand in the drip. The peonies were the last of the year, heavy-headed and blush-pink, and she had told herself she would sell them by noon or give them to the bakery across the square.

At half past eleven a man in a yellow cagoule stopped at the stall and asked for a bouquet for his mother. She had grown peonies behind a terraced house in Hunslet for forty years, he said, and once told him that a peony in full bloom looked like it was apologising for taking up so much room. Maud laughed, then didn't, because she knew the woman. She had bought seedlings from her every spring until the spring she stopped coming.
Maud wrapped the biggest bloom in brown paper and added a sprig of the pale hibiscus from the back shelf, the one nobody bought in November, and a fistful of forget-me-nots from a tin bucket. 'She'll know whose these are,' the man said. Maud shook her head. 'She'll know whose garden they came out of.'
After he left she sat on an upturned crate and watched the rain bead on the leaves that remained. She took the last peony from under the counter, where she had hidden it in damp newspaper, and set it in a jam jar on the crate, where the weather could not reach it.
