Floral bouquet on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of large open flowers with smaller buds, cornflower-like blooms and leaves forms a bouquet across the outer thigh. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading and stippling inside the petals and centres. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against pale skin, with the subject's denim shorts and a purple floral top at the top of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The poppies came up along the wood edge again this year, the big papery ones that open as if they've been waiting all winter to be rude about it. I've been out with my pencil every morning before the dew lifts. You'd laugh at me, crouched in the stubble with my knees soaked through, but the petals only hold still for about an hour before the wind gets at them.

Mr Ashdown says the cornflowers have gone from the top field entirely since they started spraying the headland, so I went looking along the ditch by the old sluice gate instead. I found a clump of them tangled in the nettles, blue gone nearly grey in my drawing, and one bud still closed tight as a fist. I carried it home in my cardigan pocket and it has been sitting in a jam jar on the windowsill ever since, opening a little more each day as though it has decided to forgive me.

I've tried to draw the whole bouquet at once, the way Mother used to arrange things for the church, the big flowers at the centre and the small ones tucked behind. The shading is the hard part. Stippling the middles takes forever and my hand cramps, but those dots are what make them look as if they might dust your fingers with pollen.

I'm sending the sheet with this letter, plus a twist of seed from the hedge. Sow it in spring, not before, and keep the cat away from the tray. Come up at Easter and we'll walk the wood edge together. I'll show you where the gate used to be.

Love, Aunt Hester
