Blue peony and lavender on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A large blue peony bloom sits at the centre of the design, with shaded petals in several tones of blue. Green leaves and thin sprigs of lavender with black outlines spread around it, and the composition sits on the upper thigh. The image is a close, well-lit photograph of the tattoo on skin, with a black top and grey underwear visible at the top of the frame.

Dear Maureen,

The lavender on the fourth-floor walkway has finally come good, so I have pinched a sprig for every flat along Ashdown House and left them hooked over the door handles with a note saying they are from the woman who keeps asking the caretaker about the lift. Mr Pell on eleven said he had never smelt anything like it outside a chemist's. I told him that was the point.
The peony is the trouble. You said blue peonies were a myth, and you were right about the packet, which promised a colour the seed merchant had clearly invented in a back room. Mine came up the shade of a bruised plum and sulked for two summers. Last week I dug it out of the bed by the bins and moved it into the big ceramic pot by the window, and this morning there was one bloom, blue as the bottom of a gas flame, opening from the outside in, the way your mum always said a proper rose should.
I stood in the stairwell with the door propped and the wind coming up the shaft, thinking about how you keep asking me to come down to Margate and stop looking at the view from up here. I haven't decided. The flowers don't mind which way I go, which is more than I can say for the lift.
I've put the first bloom on the bottom step with a note weighted under a stone, so whoever comes in out of the rain has to stop and look at it. Write back and tell me if it's blue where you are.
Love, Carol
