Floral henna-style design on the back of a hand

Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown from the back, with a large dark floral motif of two blossoms and leaves across the back of the hand. A fine vine with curling swirls runs down the index finger, and the linework is bold on the petals and lighter on the leaf details. The ink is a single dark brown-black tone on pale skin against a soft cream background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The oven door has been open for ten minutes and flour still hangs in the light from the bulb over the bench. Nobody has told you yet that the wedding order is wrong, so you start on the piping. Ruth's sponge rounds sit cooling beside you, and the buttercream has been beaten to a stiff paste that keeps the shape of whatever you press it into.

You pipe the first petal the way Ruth taught you: a small pressure, a lift, a pull back toward the centre. Five petals, then a second bloom tucked behind it, with leaves drawn by the tip of the nozzle so they thin at the ends. The vine is harder. It has to run down the side of the cake in one unbroken line and curl at the bottom like a fern unfurling. Ruth comes past with a tray of rolls, looks over your shoulder, and says nothing, which from Ruth is praise.

The order on the whiteboard says plain, underlined twice in her capitals. You tell yourself this is a test piece for the window, and you keep going anyway, slower now, because a line you can't see the end of is the only kind worth making. The darkness in the glass turns grey. Dark chocolate blossoms climb the cake's flank in a second skin of pattern.

When the van comes for the morning run, Ruth lifts the cake onto the board and holds it a long moment. Then she writes a new label, Plain for the bride, and slides the other cake into the box marked Window. Pick up another bag, she says, and make the vine again. You don't need telling twice.
