Mam's cough has eased since the sea air, though she will not stop pretending she can still see the bobbin pins without her glasses. I found her pattern book under the stairs, the one with the brown cover and the coffee ring. You know the page, the round one she called the Whitby Wheel, eight scalloped petals opening out from a single eye, with a band pulled straight across the middle like a bangle she never wore.

I sat on the step and copied it out with the good pencil. Every petal is pricked with tiny dots where the threads cross, and she insisted the drops at the bottom were weights that kept the lace from curling. Thirty-one of them hang from the lower border, one for each year of the pattern's life, she said. I counted twice and got thirty-one both times, which I suppose settles it.

Tom from the fish quay asked me yesterday what I was drawing, and when I showed him he said it looked like something a hand would wear, not a tablecloth. I told him Mam would have had a fit at the comparison. Then I went home and tried it out on my own wrist with a biro, which is how I came to be standing in the kitchen at midnight with ink on my fingers.

Come up at Easter and bring the blue thread. I want to see whether the drops still hang straight when the lace is stretched across a real arm, the way she always said they should.
