Floral linework forearm tattoo with eye medallion

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised forearm is photographed against a pale background, with a small doll-shaped figure balanced on the hand. The tattoo covers the forearm with bold black outline florals, including a peony, leaves and scrolling foliage, above a circular medallion containing a pair of closed eyes. The image is monochrome, with no shading visible in the linework.

Dear Tom, the peonies came out early this year along the back wall, which Mam says is a bad sign, though she said the same about the spring the pit went quiet and the bread ran short. Mr Pell from the allotments has been cutting his leaves into scrolls again for the chapel fête, and the whole lane smells of cut grass and coal dust, the way it always does when the wind turns west.

The painted doll you left on the windowsill is still there. I moved her to the mantel after the dust got into the cracks of her skirt, and I dust her every Sunday with the corner of my apron. She has the same sleepy face you gave her with the paintbrush, the lids half down, and I've started to think she's listening for the cage bell the way the rest of us do. Mrs Acaster says dolls like that are made to keep a body company while the rest of it sleeps, and I told her she'd been reading too many of the Sunday papers.

Dad's old medallion is in the drawer with the lamp oil. You'll remember the shape of it, the ring of leaves and the two eyes shut tight in the middle, which he had copied onto the pit lamp hook so the men could tell it was theirs. He never said why. I took it out this morning and held it up to the glass, and the light came through the leaves in a way I hadn't seen before.

I've put the doll back in the window, facing the lane, so she can see you coming home when the Newcastle train finally brings you back. Mind the step at the bottom, it's loose. Write when you can. Your loving sister, Nell.
