Skull and pocket watch tattoos on thighs

Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows a pair of legs raised against a wooden bed frame, with a tattoo on each thigh. The left thigh has a sketchy pocket watch with a banner and loose swirling linework, while the right thigh carries a large shaded skull wrapped in fabric or ornament with a cross-like shape below. The image is monochrome, so the ink appears in black and grey tones with soft shading across the skull.

The watch stopped at seventeen minutes past four, somewhere east of the last petrol station, and you pulled onto the gravel shoulder because Abernathy had always said a dead thing should never be carried further than it needed to be. The case sat on the passenger seat in its wrapping of grey cloth, and the heat coming off the blacktop made the windscreen shimmer like a bad signal.

The road ran straight for forty miles without a bend, the kind that makes you talk to yourself. Along the verge, somebody had hammered in a cross of two splintered fence posts and wired a tin plate to it. The plate had no name, only a date worn almost smooth. You had been told the watch belonged to a woman in Vesper Flats who had outlived the man who wore it, and that she wanted it returned before the sun went down on the anniversary.

You lifted the lid with a thumbnail. Under the glass, the hands had frozen where the mainspring gave up, and the banner across the dial had faded to a single word you could still read: SAW. Nothing else. You turned the crown slowly, the way Abernathy taught you, and felt the spring take up its tension with a small, reluctant click.

The second hand jerked, then ran. You sat there listening to it over the engine's idle until the light went orange across the dashboard, and then you put the car in gear and drove on toward Vesper Flats with the watch ticking loudly on the seat beside you, because some things only keep good time for the people who come to collect them.
