Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
A tattoo arranged in the shape of a Mickey Mouse head, made up of flowers including a large teal rose, pink and purple blooms, and blue star-shaped flowers. Bold black outlines define each motif, with flat colour fills and small scattered dots of pink, teal and white filling the spaces between them. The design sits centrally on the skin of a lower leg, shown in a close, straight-on framing.

Old Tomas Bevan said the slag heap above Cwm Ddu had been bare since the fire of 1909, and that nothing grew there but grey stone and wind. His granddaughter Ffion didn't believe him. She said so across the kitchen table while the kettle ticked on the range and the pit whistle sounded for the night shift.

She climbed the tip every Sunday with a paper bag of seed her mother had saved from the chapel garden: sweet peas, foxgloves, and one rose cutting wrapped in wet flannel. Nothing took for a month. Then, in the wet spring, a green-blue shoot pushed up between the clinker, and by June there were blooms the colour of a kingfisher's back, with pink and violet flowers crowding the ridge beside them. From the road, the planting began to show its shape. Two round ears rose on either side of a broad round face, and the face looked down on the colliery gates.
The men said it was a sign. The women said it was cheek. One evening Tomas walked up with his stick and stood a long while at the edge, looking at the great teal rose set at the chin. He told her it was the same bloom his wife had grown by their first front step, and that he had given up on it the winter the roof came in. Ffion asked him what it meant. He rubbed a leaf between his finger and thumb and said a face like that only ever means someone is still watching the road.
That autumn the wind came round from the west and carried the dust off the tip, and a fine scatter of pink and white specks settled over the village like seed. Ffion's little brother ran down the lane with his arms out, laughing, and the dots stuck to his jumper all the way to the chapel gate.
