Woman profile with fox and teal rose on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman's profile wears a fox head and a headpiece of orange flowers and green leaves, with a dark hairstyle and a gold hoop earring. Below her, a large teal rose with shaded petals sits beside green leaves and a red and orange drapery detail. Bold black outlines and solid fills in red, orange, teal and green give the piece a classic flash look, and it wraps across the shoulder and upper arm.

Vera came up the back stairs at ten to eleven with the fox still draped over one shoulder, its glass eyes catching the bulbs from the bandstand. I was counting cloakroom tickets on the ledge and didn't look up. Nobody climbed those stairs unless they had something to put down. "Tony Greaves asked me to marry him," she said. "On the floor, between the rumba and the foxtrot, with the whole room watching."

I told her the fox would have bitten him if he'd been quick enough. She laughed the way she did when she was frightened, a short bark that sounded nothing like her. The Starlight Rooms had booked the Lucas Brothers for the spring season, and half the girls in Leeds had a brown-suited man hanging round them by June. Vera had always said she'd marry when the ballroom closed, which it never would.
She unclasped the fox and laid it across my arm like a warm sleeping dog. Its painted fur had worn pale at the nose from years of being passed between coat pegs. "Mind him," she said. "He's the only one who ever listened to me." Then she took a teal silk rose from her hair, gone soft at the edges, and tucked it into my cardigan buttonhole. "Keep that for me. I'll come back for both."
She went down the stairs in her good shoes, one hand on the rail, and I heard the band swing into the last waltz. I sat with the fox in my lap and the rose against my chest until closing. When Tony came up looking for her, I handed him his hat and kept the stole.
