Floral side piece sketch in red pencil

Botanical · Other · Colour · Flash

A sketchbook page showing two line drawings of a torso and hip outline, each with a floral tattoo design along the side. The design uses large layered flower heads, curling swirls, leaves and vines in red pencil linework. The drawing is unshaded, with light sketch marks and a few construction lines visible around the flowers.

Dear Tom, the dahlias came up red this year, just as the seed merchant promised, and Mum cut the front bed for the harvest supper and still had armfuls left over. I've put a bucket of them on the step for you to find when you're home, though the gulls will probably have the petals by then.

I've been spending evenings in the back room of the Crown with a red pencil, drawing for Mr Hollis, who wants his new tea room papered with vines. He gave me the room and a jar of sharpened pencils and said he didn't care what I did so long as it looked like the country in June. So I drew two tall spirals climbing either side of the doorway, leaves curling off them as if someone had flicked a wrist, and flower heads stacked one above another, petals layered so the lines overlap and the eye can't quite find the centre. Mr Hollis squinted at it for a long time and then asked whether the flowers were real. I said they came from my head, and he laughed and said that was the best kind.

The trouble is the damp. Every wall in that building sweats in winter, and I keep thinking the fine lines will bleed away before anyone sees them. Yesterday I went over the swirls a second time in heavier strokes, not caring if they looked messy, and it was the first thing all week that felt finished.

I've pinned the sheet to the kitchen door where the morning light comes in. When you walk up the lane you'll see it before you see me. Come home soon, and mind the tide at the harbour wall. Your loving sister, June.
