Peony and paisley swirl design

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing of a full-bloom peony with layered petals, two leaves and a tendril of paisley-style scrollwork surrounding it. The outlines are bold black with finer interior detail, and the petals have light grey shading with a faint pink tint near their bases. The flower sits in the upper right of the sheet, with the swirls sweeping down to the lower left against a plain white background, and a Micron pen lies across the top left.

At three in the morning the ward goes quiet in a particular way, and you learn to hear it. You have a fine-liner from the stationery drawer in your breast pocket, the back of a spare discharge sheet on your clipboard, and nothing else to do until the obs round at four. Mrs Okafor's drip has finished. Bed six is snoring. You start drawing without deciding to.

The flower comes first, because flowers are what you draw when you are frightened of a blank page. Big and overblown, the kind of peony your gran kept in a jug by the sink in Leeds, petals folding over petals like someone who has given up trying to be neat. Then the two leaves, pressed harder at the edges so they hold. Then the swirls, which are the part you actually love, curling down the margin like smoke that has decided to stay.

Night staff pick things up. Ruth on the desk leans over your shoulder at half four and says the paisley is showing off. You tell her it's just a doodle. She tells you that's what everybody says before they go and have their own initials done on the inside of a wrist. You laugh, the call bell goes for bed nine, and you tuck the sheet under the chart.

Later, when the sky over the car park turns the colour of weak tea, you find the drawing again folded in your pocket, the ink bled a little where you pressed too hard. You smooth it flat on the desk and see the peony looking back at you, open at the centre, and it seems to you that it has been waiting all night for someone to finish it.
