Floral skull line drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A skull outline is built entirely from flowers, including carnations, orchids and poppies, with stems, leaves and small buds filling the cranium, eye sockets and jaw. The drawing uses fine, even black linework with light hatching on the petals and no solid fills. The plain white background and centred composition present it as a standalone design.

The gardener of Veyl had three daughters and one wall, and the wall was the trouble. Every spring the damp came up through the mortar and every autumn the frost split another stone, until the old queen sent for the gardener and said the wall would fall on the kitchen before the year was out. So the gardener went out with his spade and his shears and dug up everything that was growing along the foot of it, which was nettle, bindweed and a great many poppies that nobody had planted.

He carried the roots to the middle daughter, whose name was Ilse, because she was the one who sat up with the sick and knew which plants would sleep and which would wake. She sorted them on a board by the fire. The poppies she set aside, and the bindweed she burned, and the nettles she boiled for the dye pots. Then she sat very still for a long while, looking at the bones of the old wall in the fire-glow, and said that a thing that has been holding up stone for a hundred years ought to be given something to hold up in return.
So they did not pull the wall down. They planted it. Ilse drew the shape of a skull on the whitewash with a burnt stick, and her sisters filled it in: carnations for the cheekbones, orchids for the hollows where the eyes would be, poppies for the crown, and small buds along the jaw so that it would seem to be talking. By midsummer the wall wore a grin of flowers that the whole kingdom came to see, and the damp stayed out, because roots, it turned out, are very good at keeping water where it belongs.
