The snow came over the moor road before the light had properly gone, and by the time you reached the Hollin Bank inn the lane behind you had vanished. Mrs Abernethy took your wet coat without a word and pointed you up the back stairs, past a door painted a pale, bruised pink. Beyond its frosted glass, something was flowering in January.

The orchids belonged to her sister, Ada, who had kept them through three winters in the glasshouse her husband built and then left to rot. Ada had been dead since October. Her pot-bound plants had outlived her, pale blooms opening on wire stems, and the innkeeper would not let anyone cut them. "They're the only thing in the place that doesn't want anything," she said, and you believed her until you saw the skull.

It sat on the sill among the pots, bone-white and clean, its eye sockets packed with shadow. Someone had tucked a pink petal into each socket, like a pair of spectacles. Mrs Abernethy saw you looking and did not explain. Outside, the snow kept falling on the unlit lane, and the blooms leaned slowly toward the glass as if they had been waiting for a guest who would stay.

In the morning the plough came grinding up the road, and you went down the stairs with your coat dry over your arm. The glasshouse door stood open. Every bloom had been cut and laid across the skull's brow in a neat pink crown, and the innkeeper was nowhere to be found, only a cup of tea still steaming on the bar for you to finish before the road was clear.
