Rose and blue flower sprig with ladybird on thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a pale pink rose with layered petals, surrounded by dark and olive green leaves, with a tall spray of blue-grey flower spikes rising to the upper right. A small red ladybird sits near the lower left of the design. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, with muted greens and pinks against the skin and a dark, blurred background.

The fiddler had already played the third reel twice when the miller's boy came in from the lane with a sprig of blue flowers in his fist and no idea what to do with them. Nobody at the Crossways hall was dancing with him, so he gave them to the first girl he met who was not promised to anyone, which was Nell Tadd, who was sitting by the stove with her shoes off.

She did not thank him. She put the spikes in a jug of water on the sill, because her mother had always said a thing given in a hurry should be kept until its owner came back. Then she went out to the yard for air and found a red ladybird walking along the edge of the trough, slow as a clerk, and she let it climb onto her finger and carried it back inside as if it were a coin she had been paid.
The rose came later, when the old woman who ran the bar brought a cutting from the wall of the vicarage garden, pale as skimmed milk, and set it beside the lupins without a word. Nell understood then that the room had decided something about her, and that it had done so without consulting her.
By midnight the miller's boy had asked her twice and she had said yes twice, and the ladybird was still on her wrist, opening and closing its wings as though it were counting the dances. When the hall emptied and the lamps went down, she shook it loose onto the sill beside the jug, where it sat among the blue spikes and did not fly away until morning.
