Floral tattoos on thigh and forearm

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The left photograph shows a dense cluster of flowers and leaves tattooed on the outer thigh, with a denim shorts hem above it. The right photograph shows a similar floral arrangement on the inner forearm, with a fine silver bracelet at the wrist. Both designs use black or grey ink with soft shading across the petals and foliage.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The winter the river froze to the mill wheel, Oda Brennan kept the inn's one candle burning for the carters who came through the pass. Snow buried the stable roof and the hinge of the north door sang all night like a cracked bell. Nobody came that week but a boy with frostbitten fingers and a mule that would not stop looking backwards.

He had a bundle wrapped in oilcloth, and when Oda thawed his hands by the hearth he unwrapped it: a pot of dried peony heads, a twist of thread, and a pattern of pale flowers drawn on linen so old the ink had gone the colour of smoke. His grandmother, he said, had painted the same bouquet on every ewer and tablecloth in her village, and she had told him a bouquet of blue-grey blooms would keep a traveller from losing his way in a storm, because the flowers grew only where the ground had been kind.

Oda laughed at him, then did not. In the morning the snow had stopped and the pass was clear, and on the inn's shutter someone had painted, in soot and oil, a cluster of heavy blossoms with leaves curling like tongues of smoke. The boy was gone, and so was the mule. Oda never learned whether he had left the picture or whether the storm had simply stopped painting its own. She kept the shutter, and every winter after, the carters found it first and took the road that led to it.
