Floral wreath with quote on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a quote in black capital lettering arranged in an oval, with the words LOVE, IT WILL NOT BETRAY YOU, DISMAY OR DISLIKE YOU, IT WILL SET YOU FREE. A wreath of stylised flowers and leaves in red, purple, blue and green surrounds the text. The photograph is taken from the side of the arm against a plain studio background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The rain had been coming in sideways since eight, and by eleven the canvas over your stall sagged like a wet sail, pooling in the dip above the dahlias. You had stopped pretending the buckets caught it. Anna from the cheese van shouted across that you should pack up, but the wreath wasn't finished, and you never sent a wreath out half made.

You had a wire ring, a coil of ivy, and whatever the Dutch lorry had left you at four that morning: lilac, a clematis going over at the edges, a few sprigs of clover someone had dropped in the bucket for luck. Mr Abernethy came back under a black umbrella with its spokes bent backwards. He had bought his wife's funeral flowers from you in March. He didn't want anything for a grave. He wanted something for the front door of the house she had kept, and he had a folded page from one of her books in his coat pocket, the words underlined in pencil. You copied them onto a paper ribbon in marker, letter by letter, while he watched the rain run off the awning.
LOVE, it said across the top, in big square capitals, and then the rest in smaller ones, the way she must have underlined them. You wound the clover in where the letters bent, pinned purple flowers to the gaps, and tucked a single red bloom at the bottom where the sentence ended.
He paid in coins he counted twice, shook water from the brim of his hat, and carried the wreath to the car with both hands like a tray of something hot. You watched his taillights go up the hill. The rain kept falling, but the ribbon was sealed in cellophane, and under it the words stayed dry.
