Black and grey peony cluster on an arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of three peonies with layered petals and dark leaves wraps across the arm. The bold outlines are filled with soft grey shading, with deeper black in the leaves and the centres of the flowers. The composition is dense and fills the frame, with a blurred background behind the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost came down the hill the night before the wedding, and Maren Solt went out in her nightdress with a lamp and a basket of old sacking. Her husband's three peonies stood against the south wall, heavy with buds that had not yet decided to open. She wrapped the first, then the second, then knelt in the wet grass for the third, because he had carried it up from the coast the spring they married and planted it with his own hands.

Her neighbour Dorrit came over the stile with a candle and told her she was a fool. Peonies came back every year whether you fussed over them or not, she said. Maren kept winding sacking. The flowers were not the point, she said. The point was that somebody had to stay out in the cold for them, and she would rather be cold than wake to find the spring had passed her by.

Near dawn the wind dropped. The lamp had burned low, and Maren sat with her back to the wall, waiting for the light to show her what she had saved. When it came, the three buds had not opened, but their outer petals had gone dark at the edges, folded over one another like the pages of a letter nobody had finished. Dorrit brought bread and said nothing about it.

By midsummer the cluster had spilled over the wall and onto the path, so heavy that visitors had to duck beneath it. Maren cut one bloom for the table and left the rest to the bees. Her husband never came back from the coast, but nobody in the valley called her a fool for the frost again.
