Flower-headed figure on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a stylised female figure in a polka dot dress, with a cluster of flower blooms and leaves in place of her head. The linework is fine and precise, with dotwork stippling used for shading the petals and leaves. The design runs vertically down the outer upper arm against a plain white background.

Sit down, you lot, and mind the peelings. Yes, I'm getting to it. Dolly Fenn was the only girl on Hull quay who wore a spotted dress in January, and the gulls knew it, because they followed her up the cobbles every morning as if she owed them money. She sold dahlias from a barrow outside the fish market, big shaggy ones the colour of a bruise, and she never once let a man haggle her down.

Then came the winter the ice shut the harbour and nobody bought flowers. Dolly sat on her barrow with her hands in her pockets and went quiet, and quiet on a quay is a dangerous thing. The old salts said she'd gone soft in the head. Her head, mind, was a different matter. Some mornings the stallholders swore they saw blooms pushing up through her hair, petals curling where her ears should be, and the first mate swore he'd found a leaf tucked behind her collar.
The spring the Marguerite sailed, Dolly walked up the gangplank in her spotted dress and her good shoes, and she never looked back at the town. Nobody saw her come aboard. Nobody saw her leave the ship either, but the cook on that voyage found a hard green stalk growing out of the flour bin, and it had flowered by Tuesday.
So when that flour bin sprouts a stalk, you leave it be, and you don't say her name, because she only comes back for people who talk too much. Now pass me that knife, and mind your fingers.
