Peony cluster on a shoulder

Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three peony-style flowers with a sprig of leaves and buds, arranged on a diagonal from the collarbone toward the top of the shoulder. Fine outlines and stippled dotwork shading give the petals and leaves depth and texture. The design is rendered in black ink and greys against pale skin and a white brick wall, with the crop focused tightly on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The peonies came up again on Tuesday, the three of them by the gate where Mum put them the year you went to Leeds. I stood there in my wellies with the secateurs and didn't cut anything for almost ten minutes, because Dad always said you had to wait until the buds went soft and loose, like a fist letting go, or they'd just open and drop their petals on the path. I told myself I was waiting for the right morning. Really I was waiting for you to ring.

The nursery has been ours since the spring, so the bed is the only thing here that isn't for sale. Mrs Okafor from the allotments came by with a flask and asked if we were keeping the old cultivar, the dark pink one with the ruffled collar. I said yes before I thought about it. It's the one you used to drag under the kitchen table to show the cat.

On the fourth day the buds split. Heavy, rosy heads, the petals folding out in layers like someone unwrapping tissue paper, and a few tiny black ants already walking over them the way they always do. I cut the best one, put it in a jam jar on the windowsill of the potting shed, and sat with it until the light went. By morning the petals were loose on the sill, so I pressed a few into an envelope and posted them to you, which is a daft thing to do with a flower, but it's what Mum would have done.

Come up in June if you can. The other two will be out by then.

Love, Jo
