Flower sprig on the back of the neck

Botanical · Neck · Mixed · Photo

A small sprig of open flowers, two buds and green leaves is tattooed on the back of the neck. The flowers are outlined in black with grey shading, giving them a soft, dimensional look. The leaves are filled with muted green and the design sits centred on bare skin above a white top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The briar on the tip above Hollin Row was the only green thing left when the Kettle Pit flooded. Nobody had planted it. The old men said it had come up through the coal dust the way a rumour comes up through a chapel floor, slowly and without asking leave of anyone.

Ada Brack's boy, Tom, was on the far side of the water when the roof gave. The manager, Mr Pellow, stood at the top of the shaft with his cap in his hands and said the workings were lost. Ada did not argue. Each morning she climbed the tip with a clasp knife, cut one sprig of the briar, two buds and a fan of leaves, and laid it on the wet step by the engine house where the men came up to wash.

The flowers opened white on the stone, and the coal dust settled on their edges like frost. Men who had never prayed began stopping there, touching a leaf with a black finger and saying the names of those still below. Nobody told them to. By the second week the step was crowded with sprigs, and the tip looked as if someone had dropped a sheet of lace across it.

On the nineteenth day Pellow came down the lane without his cap and said they had broken through to the old north level. Ada was already at the step. She picked up the sprig nearest her boots, found its petals gone brown and flat, and tucked it into her apron pocket anyway. Tom came up at dusk with his lamp still lit, asked what the flowers were for, and she told him they were for keeping.
