Stylised waves and rocks on a lower leg

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The design shows a stylised sea with curling, layered waves across the top and a band of horizontal wave lines below. Several rounded rocks and a stippled sandy shore sit at the base of the composition. The work is done in fine black linework with dotwork shading on the rocks and sand, and uses no colour.

Her customers were all married to the sea in one way or another. Mrs Trevena came in each Thursday with the rain dripping off her umbrella onto the mat, and bought one print for the kitchen and one to tuck in the drawer with her husband's letters. She never asked for a particular stretch of water. She only asked that the rocks be right.

"Why don't the rocks have any lines?" the Pascoe boy asked one morning, his nose pressed to the shop window. Ada told him the rocks were the only part of the sea that had decided to stay put, so she left them paper-white, the way a headland looks when the tide has gone out and the spray has finished with it. He considered this and said it was a daft thing to draw. She agreed that it was.

That evening she inked the last run, the sand stippled with the point of a needle until it felt gritty under a thumb, and hung the sheets to dry above the stove. Outside, the rain kept on at the shutters. By morning the paper had curled slightly at the corners, and the lines of the water had settled into the grain as if they had always been there, the rocks standing bright and bare at the bottom of the sheet, waiting for the tide to come back for them.
