Flower vase with rose on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A blossom patterned vase holds a red rose, a blue daisy, orange and maroon flowers, and dark green foliage. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with solid fills and soft shading in red, blue and orange, while the vase is shaded in grey and black. The design runs diagonally up the forearm against a plain white background, with a small bee partly visible at the top edge.

Dear Nell,

The lane took the snow on Tuesday and has not given it back. Mrs Pryce at the Fleece has put us all in the back parlour by the range, and I have spent three evenings counting the rooms upstairs, which are nine, and the guests, which are six if you include the commercial man who sleeps in his coat. The landlord's wife sent up a vase this morning with a single rose in it, cut from the glasshouse she keeps behind the stables, and the rose is already dropping petals on the sill. She says the vase belonged to her mother, who brought it from Bristol with a crate of cups and a bad temper.
It is painted all over with blossom, pale pink on white, and a gold band round the lip where someone has rubbed it bright with their thumbs. I asked whether the flowers in it were roses or peonies, and she said they were whatever the vase had decided, and that I should stop fussing and eat my soup.
The thing is, Nell, I found a bee in the jug of water this afternoon, half drowned and furious, and I sat with it on the sill for an hour until it could fly. Mrs Pryce watched me from the doorway and said bees are the only sensible guests in January, they come in when they're cold and leave when they're fed. I think she meant it kindly.
The road should open Thursday. The man in the coat says so every morning. I am writing this so I have something to post, and so that when I come home you will know which rose I was looking at when I stopped being in a hurry. Bring the good scissors. The vase needs another stem.
Yours, Ada
