Flower vine running down the upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A slender vine of black five-petalled flowers with curling stems runs diagonally from the nape of the neck down over the shoulder blade. The linework is bold and even, with solid black petals and simple outlined stems, and the tattoo is shown in black ink only. The woman is photographed from behind against a pale sofa, with her face outside the frame and the tattoo placed centrally across the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie had been pulling bindweed from the plum rows since six, and by eleven the sun had gone white over the orchard. The old tree at the bottom of the slope still had its wire wrapped round the trunk. Her brother wanted it felled before the picking. Their father had planted it the year Marjorie was born and would not hear of it.

The vine had got into everything: the trunk, the stone wall, the gutter of the cider shed. Its flowers were small and stubborn, five black petals each, and in the flat light they looked cut from card. She knelt with the secateurs and followed one stem down from the lowest branch, along the wall, under the gate, until it went into the ground behind the shed in a knot of root as thick as her wrist. Nobody had dug there in years.

She cut it at the knot and dragged the length of it onto the grass, where it lay like something caught out in the open. Then she sat on an upturned crate to watch, though she could not have said what for. By evening the cut ends had gone brown and the flowers hung limp. The next morning there was one open on the wall, and beside it a new shoot had already found the fence post and begun to curl round it, patient as if no one had ever told it no.

Marjorie picked up the shears, looked at the shoot for a long while, and left it where it was. Her brother could have the rest of the wire.
