Profile of a woman with flowers in hair

Black and grey · Flash

A bold black line drawing of a woman's head and shoulders in profile, with her eyes closed and her hair swept back. Small flower clusters are drawn into the hair, and a few loose strokes suggest a hairline, an earring and the curve of the neck and shoulders. The image is in black ink on a white background with no shading or colour.

Mind the step, you lot, the cobbles go slick when the rain comes sideways off the river like that. Sit down, sit. Mrs Haddow will sell you her cabbages whether you listen or no, so you may as well hear about Ada Pennock and the stall with the blue awning.

Ada sold cut flowers at the Tuesday market on Shambles Row, and she had a way of tucking a sprig of jasmine behind her ear that made the fishmongers forget their prices. Every morning she wove the stems into her hair before the first customer came, and every morning the rain beat the petals flat, and every morning she wove them again. Folk said she was vain. I say she was stubborn, which is a better thing to be in a wet town.

One grey Tuesday a man in a coat too good for the weather stopped at her stall and asked for a bunch of white roses for a funeral. He paid in silver and never once looked up from her hands. She wrapped the roses slowly, and when he had gone she found the silver was counterfeit, every coin of it, and the roses were gone too. The jasmine in her hair was still there. She had kept her eyes shut against the rain the whole time, so she never saw his face, and that was the only luck she had that day.

So what did Ada do? She shut the stall early, walked down to the river, and sat on the wall with the petals dripping off her hair into the brown water. She said nothing to the constable. She did not need to. The next Tuesday the man came back for a bunch of violets and found the whole market waiting for him, every stallholder with a coin of his own.
