Flying bird with swirling tail design
Black and grey · Flash
A stylised bird in mid-flight is shown in profile, with long feathered wings swept upwards and a tail that curls into a spiral at the end. The linework is bold and tapered, with smooth grey shading that gives the wings and body depth. The subject sits centred on a plain white background with no other elements.

Kemal had counted the swifts under the eaves of Ashgrove House every summer for six years, and this June there were only four pairs where there had been seven. He stood on the ninth-floor balcony with a flask going cold in his hand and watched them scythe past the grey concrete, wings swept back, tails trailing behind like ink flicked off a brush.

Behind him his granddaughter Ruby sat cross-legged on the balcony mat, sketching on the back of a council letter. "It doesn't curl like that," she said, squinting at her work. "It goes round once and just stops." Kemal took the biro from her and drew the line the way his father had shown him in Izmir, a long taper that spun into a spiral at the end, the feathers thinning until they were hardly feathers at all.
The letter was not about birds. It said the block would be emptied by October, the lifts were being taken out for scrap, and the swifts would have to find another tower with more fools in it. Ruby read it twice and said they would find one. Kemal folded the drawing into the flask bag without answering, because he had no idea whether she was right.
In the morning the balcony was quiet. Then one bird came low over the car park, wings tight, and looped over the bins with its tail curling after it. Kemal watched it go round once more before it stopped.
