Folk floral tattoo on ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A red tulip-like bloom with a blue and yellow centre sits at the heart of this design, flanked by clusters of blue forget-me-not flowers, orange berries and green stems with leaves. The linework is bold and outlined, with flat, solid fills in red, blue, orange and green on the skin. The design climbs from the ankle up the outer lower leg, with the foot visible at the bottom of the frame against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tin of red lead had been rolling around the back of Dad's Bedford since Bakersfield, and by the third day on the Mojave road it had started to weep through its lid. I wiped the rim with a rag and thought of my grandmother, who would have scolded me for leaving the cap loose. She painted wardrobes and cart panels in a village outside Łowicz, and she always said a tulip was only a tulip if its centre looked back at you.

The petrol station at Amboy had one wall nobody had bothered to whitewash, sun-bleached to the colour of bone. Earl, who ran the pumps, watched me set up the ladder without asking why. I mixed the red with a dab of ultramarine and a drop of linseed, and the first petal went on flat and sure, the way she had taught me on the back of a kitchen door.

By noon I had a tulip the height of a man, its eye a blue ring with a yellow bead at the heart. Earl came out with two cups of coffee and stood looking up with his hands in his pockets. Then he asked whether I could paint forget-me-nots in the gap beside the bins, because his wife had died in March and had grown them in a chipped enamel bowl by the back step. I said yes before I had thought about whether I could.

I painted five blue flowers, each with a small orange heart, and when they dried the wall looked like a page torn from a book nobody would miss. Nobody came to thank me. The heat kept the road empty, and dust rolled over the stems while I packed the tins. Earl lifted a hand from the forecourt, and in the mirror the flowers shrank against the grey hills, the only thing out there that looked like it had been planted on purpose.
