Forest and deer landscape sleeve on arm and shoulder
Realism · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A woman is shown from behind in a dark vest top, with a full sleeve tattoo running from her shoulder to her forearm. The design shows a pine forest under an orange sunset, with a deer on the upper shoulder and a rocky slope beneath the trees. Grey and black shading gives the trees and stones depth, while the sky fades into soft peach and orange tones.

Dear Tomas,

The stone wall is finished at last, though Father says it will not hold through another thaw. We carried the last of the slabs up from the scree on Tuesday, four of us and the mule that refuses to be hurried. From the top of the slope you can see the whole valley going orange behind the pines, the way it did the night you left, and I stood there with grit in my hands and thought of you on that train with your collar turned up.
The stag came down again this morning. He is much thinner than he was in spring and walks as if the rocks might give way under him, but he stopped at the wall, looked at me for a long while, then climbed the shoulder of the hill towards the dark firs as though he had an appointment there. I did not follow him. Father says a deer that trusts you will be shot by the first hunter who mistakes it for a pet, so I let him go.
I am sending you a sketch of the view with this letter, so you can see what I mean about the light here at dusk. The trees go black at their edges, the sky turns the colour of the inside of a peach, and the stones take the glow and hold it long after the sun has gone. Mother used to say the mountain was only keeping the day for later.
Come home when the passes open. The wall will need a second pair of hands, and I have kept the largest stone, the one with the white vein like a river, in the cart for you to lift. It is a poor sort of present, I know, but it is the only thing up here that will still be where you left it in the morning.
Your sister, Ilka
