Forest sleeve tattoo on a forearm with a cat

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with a ring rests on the head of a white cat, and the forearm shows a large sleeve tattoo of pine trees and forest scenery. The tattoo is built from grey shading and fine detail, with dense trees and textured tonal areas across the arm. The photograph is black and white, so the composition centres on the contrast between the dark tattoo, the pale fur and the sofa behind.

Hush now, the fire's only warm on one side, so shift along. Tomas, put that bread down, you'll hear the rest of it or you'll get no sugared plums at midwinter. The pines of Hollin Reach were older than the kingdom of Maren, older than the first stone of its wall, and when King Aldric's shipwrights came up the valley with their saws, the forest did not stand and wait for them.

They found a white cat on the first stump they cut, sitting with its tail wrapped round its paws as if it owned the timber. The foreman kicked at it. The cat did not move. By dusk the foreman had a split lip and the cat was asleep on his coat. Next morning the saws would not bite. Every blade came back blunt as a spoon, and the men swore they saw the cat walking ahead of them along the ridge, lighting the way for the trees.

Aldric came himself in the grey of winter, sword on his hip and pride in his jaw. He found the cat on a rock above the valley and reached out to take its head in his hand, the way a man does with a beast he means to cart off. But the cat leaned into his palm, and the king, who had not been touched kindly since his mother died, stood there so long the snow settled on his shoulders.

He ordered the saws put away. The pines are still standing in Hollin Reach, and if you walk there at dawn you will find a white cat on every third stump, and the print of a hand pressed into the bark of the oldest tree, where it still rests on a sleeping head. Now bed, the lot of you. Tomas, you can keep the plums.
