Script and botanical tattoos on legs with a sphynx cat
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of two bare legs in patterned knitted socks, with a hairless sphynx cat resting on the upper leg. The tattoos include flowing script lettering across the thigh, a crown, and a large botanical or floral motif with shaded detail. The ink is black and grey on a dark bed background, with a leopard print item visible at the lower edge.

The rain had found the gap in the tarp again, so Nell Corrigan dragged her buckets of roses two stalls down the aisle, where the cat was already sitting on Mr Abara's fish crate as though he had paid the rent on it. Pilchard was bald as a boiled egg and twice as stubborn. He watched the wet gather on the brim of her hat and did not once look sorry for himself.

"He's not for sale," Mr Abara said, not looking up from his scales. "Neither is the crate."
She had come to Carrow Street market for the wholesale roses, the last of the season, and she had come, if she was honest, to avoid the letter folded in her coat pocket. It had arrived on Tuesday in her brother's cramped looping hand, the words running together like ink dropped in water: come home, the house is sold, the crown is yours if you want it. The crown was their mother's, a thin tin thing she had worn to bed on birthdays. Nell had never once wanted anything from that house except the quiet of leaving it.
Pilchard stretched, yawned at the sky, and stepped down onto the wet cobbles. He walked straight to her boots and sat, tail wrapped neatly around his feet, waiting. Nell crouched, and the rain ran cold down the back of her neck, and she found she was laughing at a cat with no fur who had decided, without any help from her, that she was staying put for the afternoon.
She bought one rose from the last bucket, dark red with the petals going brown at the edge, and tucked it under the cat's chin. Then she took out her pen and wrote on the back of the letter in the same looping hand: not yet, but I'll come and see the house.
