Cat face banner tattoo on an upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A person in a khaki shirt holds a tabby cat with its eyes closed and mouth open, with the cat filling the centre of the frame. A tattoo on the upper arm shows a cat face inside a scalloped banner with script lettering, shaded in greys with a red element further down the arm. The tightly cropped, warm-toned photograph places the arm and cat together with the person's face out of view.

Nobody on the Ward 7 night rota could say when the tabby first came in, only that by the third week of November it had a bed of its own under the sluice room sink and a name written in biro on the bin lid. Maureen, who ran nights with the calm of someone who had seen everything twice, insisted it was the cleanest animal in the building. Rosie in the bay by the window thought it could hear her pain score coming.

Dominic found it at ten past three, sitting upright on a drip stand in bay four as if it had been appointed. He was a porter, not a nurse, and his job was moving beds and bodies between floors while the rest of the hospital slept. He was not supposed to lift anything heavier than a clipboard, but the cat allowed itself to be scooped up, purred once like a wound-up toy, and went limp against his shirt.
The old man in bed nine had been asking for his wife since teatime. Dominic carried the cat over without quite deciding to. The man's hand came out from under the blanket, shaking, and settled on the warm striped back. His breathing slowed. For a minute the ward was only the hum of the fridge and a monitor chirping softly in the corner.
At six the day staff arrived with their coats and their gossip. Maureen found the cat asleep on the bin lid, one paw resting over the biro name, and said nothing. Dominic walked out into the car park with the sky going the colour of weak tea, and he thought he would tell his brother about it, though he knew nobody would believe a cat had done more on the night shift than the rota.
