A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Pull your chairs in close, for this is the one about Dolly Fenn and the spring the ferry stopped coming. Dolly ran the only needle on Inish Carrach, and she kept it in a biscuit tin beside the bread oven, because the bakery was the only warm room on the island in March. Nobody came to her for anything grander than a swallow or an initial, so when Callum Reid walked in one wet morning with a sheet of paper and a grin, she knew he was trouble before he opened his mouth.

He wanted words in a curling hand, copied from a birthday card: a joke for his mother, who had turned sixty and told everyone she was still a girl. Dolly said she would write it, but she would not write it alone. She took her pen and drew two butterflies beside the letters, small things with their wings half open, the sort the swallows chased over the harbour wall every evening. Callum asked what the butterflies were for. Dolly said the joke would need something that flew away once it had got tired.

Mind you, that is not how the story ends, and I will not spoil it for you. Callum's mother sat through the whole business with her teeth clenched and her eyes on the ceiling beams. When it was done she looked at the ink, then at her son, and laughed until the bakery door rattled on its hinge. The butterflies, she said, were the only honest thing on the page, and she made Dolly sign her name beside them in the flour book.
