Peony sleeve across shoulder and upper arm
Japanese · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
The design shows large orange peony blooms with pink and red shading, several buds and stems, and teal and green leaves wrapping down the upper arm. The linework is soft and the shading is smooth, with layered petals and gentle tonal transitions. Colour dominates the composition, which is photographed against a plain beige wall and cropped below the chest and above the hip.

The mule refused the last switchback, so I carried the basket myself, forty-one peony roots wrapped in wet sacking and balanced against my hip. My uncle had sworn they would take in the lowland gardens of Jiangling, that a peony in the right soil would forgive anything, but he had never tried to coax one over a saddle in sleet. Each root held three eyes, swollen and green as jade beads, and every one of them seemed to lean toward the valley I was leaving.

At the summit, the tea-house keeper, Old Wen, took one look at the sacking and told me I was a fool. Then she pulled back the cloth with her knuckles, the way you would lift a sleeping child's blanket, and whistled. Under the wet hessian the buds had already split. Where the warmth of my back had reached them, petals the colour of a carp's flank were unfurling over the teal-veined leaves. "Sell them to the lords in the city," she said. "They'll pay for a sunrise they can't grow."
I had meant to do exactly that. Instead I walked to the wind-bitten rise where the prayer ribbons snap from the cairn, and I tied the stems one by one to the iron rail with red thread, blooms facing east. Wen brought a jug of rice wine and said nothing, which is how I knew she approved.
By dusk the wind had stripped a dozen petals and carried them down the far slope like sparks. When I looked back from the bend, the rail was a line of orange fire against the grey stone, and the mule, which had finally agreed to follow, stopped to watch it too.
