Now sit down, the lot of you, and mind the nets. You want to know why Dunnet Ferrier had a bird inked by his hip and a lie written across his middle? I'll tell you, because I was there the night the Mary Ellen came in short-handed and he sat on a fish box with a bottle of rum and a bet he could not walk back.

The bet was struck at the Jolly Cod, three pints in, against Bet Moffat, who ran the ink shop behind the chandlery and had never once lost a wager since her husband went over the Skerrow bar. She said a man who could not keep a promise would not keep a tattoo. He said a man who had kept nothing but fish for forty years could keep his word to a woman with a needle. So she took his money, and he took a swallow's worth of courage, and by the Tuesday tide the script was going on. It was a fine copperplate she dragged out of an old sea chest of lettering, with a little bird perched beside the eight as if it had been caught mid-turn in the wind off the point.
Here is the turn, and mark it well. Forever 18 was never the boast. It was the year the Mary Ellen was launched, written on her papers in the harbour office, and the bird was the swallow that nested in her wheelhouse every spring until the morning she was lost. Dunnet swore the joke was on the ink. Bet always said the joke was on the sea, which had been counting those years all along and had never once got them right.
So there it is. Ask him yourselves, if he's still awake.
