Dotwork hands with black shadow on side
Dotwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a pale outlined hand, shaded with stippled dots, overlapping a second hand that casts a solid black silhouette shape behind it. The dotwork shading gives the hands a soft, three-dimensional form against the flat black shadows. The image is in black and grey and is framed close on the skin of the side of the torso.

Rain had been coming sideways off the river since eight, and Tomasz had given up on the awning. He stood at the front of his pitch with a torch strapped to his wrist and his hands raised into the lamplight, making a heron on the white sheet pinned to the back wall. Two boys in school jumpers had stopped under the umbrella that wasn't really an umbrella any more, and their faces were lit from below like they were waiting for a bus that wouldn't come.

His father had taught him in a kitchen in Ashford, where the only light came from the cooker hood and the shadows were enormous. Hold the second hand behind the first, the old man said, and let the dark do the work. Tomasz hadn't understood that until the winter his father's knuckles swelled and he could no longer hold a teacup steady. Now his own shadow came through the sheet a fraction late, as if it had to think about it first.
The smaller boy asked whether the hand was real or just a picture. Tomasz lowered his lit hand, let the shadow stay up on the sheet a breath longer than it should, then folded its fingers into a fist. Across the aisle, Ruth was counting coins into a biscuit tin in the dry corner of her glove stall. She looked up, saw what he was doing, and didn't say anything.
He stepped out from the lamp and the wall went blank. For a moment there was only rain drumming on canvas and two hands on the sheet, one lit and one not. He lifted the lit one and the shadow rose after it, slow and correct, the way it always had.
