The snow shut Hollin Pass for nine days, and by the fifth night Mercy Dunn had burned the good candles and started on the tallow. Her husband Ned had gone over the top on the twenty-eighth of March with two mules, a sack of salt and a promise to be back before the thaw. The thaw came on the seventh day. Ned did not.

Before he left he had drawn a loop on the back of the inn ledger, the kind a child makes when told to draw a sleeping snake. Inside it he wrote forever and always, and under always the date they were wed. Mercy called it soft. Ned said a loop has no end you can get lost at, so a man only has to keep his hand on it. He pencilled the shape again on her wrist, and it smudged, and she told him to stop being sentimental and mind the mules.

On the ninth night a lantern swung up the switchbacks. Mercy heard the gate bell before she saw the light, and then she saw him, walking alone, his coat stiff with rime at the hem. He did not come in at once. He held his left hand up to the window, palm out, and she saw the pencil loop there, faint but unbroken, though his skin was raw everywhere else.

She let him in and set the kettle on and asked nothing. The old people in the valley say a traveller owes the road one true answer and the house one quiet night. In the morning the ledger lay open on the table. Beside the date he had drawn the loop again, larger this time, with a line running out of it toward the door. Mercy kept the page, and she did not ask him where the mules had gone.
