Infinity symbol with faith and bird on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo on the inner wrist shows an infinity symbol drawn in thin, even linework, with the word faith in flowing script inside its right loop. A solid black silhouette of a bird in flight sits above the left loop, joined to the infinity line by a fine curved stroke. The ink is black only, and the design is centred against plain pale skin with a page of printed text behind it.

The clock in the loft had stopped at twenty to four, so Nell Harrow wrote the time in the ledger by guessing from the light. Her father had always taken it from the church bell across the allotments. Since the funeral she had been guessing at a great many things.

Bird 114 was the last of his team still out from the Saturday race off Dieppe. The others had come home through the sleet on Sunday, dropping one by one onto the landing board with their rings clicking. Nell sat on an upturned crate with the rubber timing clock in her lap and watched the sky over the gasworks, which was the wrong sky, because the birds came in from the south-east and the sun was already going down behind the chimneys.
Her father had a saying about the flight home. A pigeon does not look for the road, he said, it looks for the loop it was born inside. He said it drunk and he said it sober, and she had never decided which version was the truth. When she was seven he drew her a figure on the back of a betting slip: a lazy eight that never lifted its pencil, with a small curl at one end where the line seemed to hesitate before going on.
At ten past five a grey shape came over the wire fence, circled the water butt twice and dropped heavy onto the board. Nell was on her feet before the crate tipped over. She tugged the ring free with cold fingers, held it to the lamp and read the number twice. Then she took the pencil from behind her ear and wrote the time in the ledger, the bell's time, the real one, and she left the clock stopped where it was.
