Ada Pell kept the post office in Hollin Cross, the last house before the beech wood began. Every Thursday the van from Coldharbour left a sack that smelled of wet cardboard, and every Thursday she sorted it on the counter under the brass lamp, card by card, the way her mother had taught her.

In October there was a letter addressed in a looping, slanted hand to the sawmill at the wood's edge. The envelope had no stamp, only a thumbprint of dried mud. Inside was a single sheet of lined paper, and across it, pressed hard enough to tear: Dad, the kettle's on. Love you. Xoxoxox. There was no return address, and the sawmill had been shut since Tom Harrower died four winters back.
Ada walked it up the lane anyway, through the drip of the beeches, her boots sinking in the leaf mould. Nell Harrower was sitting on the mill step with her hands in her lap, not working. Ada held out the envelope. Nell read it twice, then laughed in a small, cracked way and said the writing was hers from the age of nine, when she used to leave notes on the kitchen table for her father to find before the early shift. She had never posted the notes. She had only ever been the one who wrote them.
Nell folded the letter into her apron pocket and stood. Behind the mill the saw started up again, a long rising whine, and Ada heard the wood take the sound and give nothing back.
