Mrs Tregenna wanted the words across the bow in navy, and a heart beneath them with the single word Love inside, the way her mother had lettered the signs over the chandlery. I told her the heart would take a day and the shadow line another. She said the shadow was the point. Red, offset, so the letters looked like they were standing a little apart from the paint.

I worked on the Maud Irene in the lee of the net loft through three tides, lying on a board with my cheek nearly on the planking. The script ran from the stem toward the wheelhouse, arching the way a rope sags between two posts. I kept the spacing even because her husband had always said a man could forgive a wobble in a letter but never a gap.

On the last morning the wind came round and the boat swung on her mooring, and the red line went out of true by a hair against the navy. Mrs Tregenna stood on the quay with her hands deep in her coat and said it was perfect. I believed her, because she had watched that boat from the harbour wall for forty years and knew exactly how she sat in the water.

When Joe took her out the following week, the sun was low and the paint caught it. From the slipway you could read the words only when she turned, and then the red seemed to lift off the hull and hang a moment in the air, as if the boat were trying to say something a little ahead of herself.
