Script quote and small cross on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line script reading He walks with me runs across the heel and sole of a foot, with a small single-line cross on the ankle above it. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering in a flowing, connected hand. The ink is solid black on light skin, and the plain white paper beneath gives a clean, uncluttered composition.

Dear Tom, the rain has got into the chapel again, so I am writing this on my knee in the sacristy with the door propped open for light. The steward sent two men up from Alnwick to look at the roof of the castle chapel, and they went back down by noon, saying the beams were past saving. I have spent three days on them anyway. Mam would have called that stubborn, and you would have called it daft.

Yesterday I found a flagstone by the altar step, under a skin of green moss, with letters scratched into it so faint I took them for cracks. I scraped them with my thumbnail until they came clear. They read HE WALKS WITH ME, the letters running into one another the way Mam joined up her Sunday words, and below them a small cross no bigger than my palm. The stone is worn into a shallow dip from the door to the step, where a few hundred years of feet have gone the same way.

I sat in the cold a long while with the mortar going off in its bucket and thought about whoever cut it. They were probably carrying a bad roof of their own. They wanted whoever came after them to know they had not gone up that hill alone. I do not know that I believe what the stone says, but I put my boots in the worn dip and walked to the altar and back, and the flagstone did not complain.

I have set the last rafter now, and the light comes through clean onto the floor. I am leaving the stone uncovered for whoever comes up after me. Come home at Lammas if the boats allow it. Your loving sister, Agnes.
